A disappointing report on home sales failed to pull stocks into the red Thursday.

The Dow ended the day essentially unchanged, the S&P 500 added five points, and strong gains by Amazon and Apple pushed the Nasdaq 20 points higher. Crude gained nearly three percent, finishing at $60.72.
