The Kern County Sheriff’s Office will launch a probe into the conduct of a deputy who grazed a pit bull with gunfire during the investigation of a possible theft on Oswell Street in east Bakersfield.

It happened after the animal broke a chain and jumped a fence at around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

The deputy will remain on duty. The dog was not seriously hurt.
