Word of the Fed mulling its first interest rate hike in nearly a decade sent stocks into the red Wednesday.

The Dow lost 162 points, the Nasdaq gave up 40 and the S&P 500 fell 17. Increasing stockpiles sent benchmark crude $1.78 lower to $40.84 a barrel.
