DIAZ, MARA PLEA AND APOLOGIZE

BPD corruption cases conclude with pleas. The case of former Bakersfield Police narcotics detectives Damacio Diaz and Patrick Mara saw both men entering plea deals. Diaz had his plea bargain accepted in Fresno’s Federal Court Tuesday on three felony counts; bribery, drug distribution and tax evasion. The inspiration of the Disney movie, “McFarland USA” faces sentencing in September and must forfeit $128,000 in cash and property gained from meth sales. Mara is charged with an unspecified felony and filed a plea for one count that has yet to be accepted by the federal judge. U.S. Attorney Phillip Talbert would not say if he believed there is widespread corruption in the Bakersfield Police Department but did say the public would learn more soon as they release more details of their investigation. Both former detectives apologized Tuesday at press conferences saying they let their communities, families and colleagues down.
