Election concerns have prompted the Kern County Board of Supervisors to make the county Registrar of Voters a separate entity from another county department. On Tuesday the board heard a report from the county’s finance and administration committee to separate the registrar’s position from the auditor-controller-clerk post which Aimee Espinoza, the current Auditor-Controller-Clerk and Registrar of Voters, has overseen for the last two years. The move would require legislative action with a deadline of February 21. Changes would not be effective until the conclusion of Espinoza’s current term in January 2027. KGET.com reports election integrity advocates have been fighting to separate the two roles for years, citing the position of registrar of voters is too much for someone with other major responsibilities to handle.
