Kern County Fire is expanding its workforce as crews deal with extreme temperatures across the region. Spokesman Andrew Freeborn says they make sure everyone has access to shade, water, and place to rest as crews rotate in and out of a working fire.

About 100 personnel are in place above normal staffing levels. Kern County firefighters are also deployed to various incidents in the state, as part of a mutual aid agreement, including the Lake Fire in Santa Barbara County.
