Taft Residents Shelter in Place

Emergency officials have issued a shelter in place advisory for people near Taft after reports of a small chemical leak on South Lake Road. According to the Midway Driller, a ReadyKern alert was sent out just before 8 a.m. Wednesday advising people in the area near the Taft Manufacturing Plant on South Lake Road to shelter in place. The Driller reports Taft City Manager Craig Jones said he was contacted by Kern County Fire this morning and was told it was a small leak and the City of Taft should not be affected. Jones said he was told one person was exposed to the chemical and self-transported to Mercy Southwest Hospital. Jones said it is a very small leak but first responders are following safety protocols. The affected area is well east of Taft and is north of Copus Road, South of Bear Mountain Boulevard, east of Gardner Field Road and west of Interstate 5.
