Crews from Mexico and Canada have joined firefighters in Los Angeles County in the fight against the Southland wildfires, now in their ninth day. Kern County has sent nearly 200 crew members to L-A County, and 42 firefighters from Alberta, Canada began orientation in northwest Bakersfield on Wednesday. Officials say the briefings covered topics including weather conditions and the use of fire shelters. The firefighters were also updated on the powerful Santa Ana winds which have been fueling the blazes. The Canadian firefighters will be in the Southland for at least two weeks, with negotiations for extending their stay possible depending on conditions in Los Angeles. The National Interagency Fire Center has a bilateral agreement with Canada and several other countries which allows for the exchange of firefighting personnel and resources during severe wildfire activity.
